Look beyond the US Dollar to see what's really happening in the Gold Market

April 30th, 2009 by

It has become a knee-jerk reaction for investors to look at the Gold Price in terms of the US Dollar alone, and for commentators to only follow its moves in that currency. There is good reason for this, of course, for the US Dollar is the global reserve currency at present even if it is beginning to look of dubious value today.

Why don’t we measure gold in a strong currency such as the Euro?

Rye Patch acquires additional gold properties along Oreana Trend

April 30th, 2009 by

Rye Patch Gold has announced that it has staked claims in more than ten square kilometers along the Oreana Trend.

President and chief executive officer of the firm, William C Howald, said that the area is "developing potential for multiple gold deposits".

Rye Patch Gold now has 65 square kilometeres with gold and silver.

The newly acquired properties are between existing projects in Lincoln Hill and Wilco.

At Wilco there are 788,000 ounces of gold and gold equivalent, described as measured and indicated.

Rye Patch Gold has five million ounces of gold as its target.

It wants to reach this goal within 36 months.

A programme was carried out in Wilco in 2007, which led to drill exploration in the following year.

The company claims to be in a secure position with regards to cash, making it "well positioned to capitalise on new opportunities in this rapidly-changing market".

Carbon encasing 'can improve gold nanoparticles'

April 30th, 2009 by

Encasing gold nanoparticles in carbon nanoshells can improve the stability of the precious metal, researchers have suggested.

According to Nanowerk News, scientists in the US have developed a new method that enables the gold to be encapsulated in carbon, which can boost the functionality of the nanoparticles.

"We have utilised surface oxidised gold nanoparticles as catalysts for the growth of the carbon shells with well-controlled thickness employing a chemical vapour deposition process," Nitin Chopra of the University of Alabama told the news source.

This method, he noted, can produce an "addressable" amount of the nanoparticles within hours, an improvement on previous techniques, which involved dispersing gold onto a carbon transmission electron microscope grid.

Elsewhere in the nanotechnology sector, a team of scientists at Purdue University have used gold to produce nanoscale probes that can locate tumours within the human body.

According to the news source, the metal acts as a ’string’ that links iron oxide particles together.

Global health concerns 'could drive gold investment'

April 30th, 2009 by

Fears over a global swine flu pandemic could result in an increase in the popularity of gold as an investment choice, it has been suggested.

Speaking to Reuters, Darren Heathcote of Investec Australia stated that the financial uncertainly arising from the spread of the virus may cause investors to opt for the precious metal over stocks and shares.

"The problem is the potential for this to explode to pandemic proportions, leaving a lot of people very wary. It may well benefit gold, as gold would be seen as a safe haven," he was quoted as saying.

However, it remains to be seen what effects the swine flu crisis will have on the global economy, Mr Heathcote added.

In related news, gold coin expert David Albanese recently told Forbes that currency made from the precious metal is an ideal alternative to other forms of investment, as its value is unlikely to fluctuate as much as that of stocks.
