Explor Resources commences drilling on Lynx gold zone

February 28th, 2009 by

Explor Resources has announced that it has completed the initial modelling of holes intersecting its Lynx gold zone on its Eastford Lake property.

The Canadian company is starting to drill at the site in order to test the strike and depth of a gold vein.

Initially discovered in Hole EG-09-07, the high grade visible vein appears to strike in a north-north-westerly direction, dipping steeply to the south-south-west of the property.

Located close to Lake Abitibi, Ontario, the Eastford Lake project is 90km east of the Timmins-Porcupine gold mining camp and covers a total of 3,100 hectares.

Explor Resources has mineral properties in Ontario, Quebec, Saskatchewan and New Brunswick, Canada.

Traded on the TSX Venture exchange, the gold exploration firm is currently focused on its 10,434 hectare land position within the Abitibi greenstone belt in Ontario and Quebec, an area where more than 180 million ounces of gold have been found to date.

Duffy and Clogau to launch jewellery range

February 28th, 2009 by

Welsh singer Duffy has teamed up with Clogau Gold to launch a new range of gold jewellery, it has been announced.

Discussions between the Welsh gold manufacturer and the winner of three titles at this year’s Brit Awards are currently ongoing, with a target launch date of the middle of this year being set, Spring Fair reports.

A spokesperson for the jewellery firm told the news source that while the talks are still in the early stages, "she is keen to work with Clogau due to her Welsh background".

Earlier this month Clogau, which uses Welsh gold sources from the Snowdonia region, unveiled a new range of jewellery.

An 18-c anniversary ring with polished raised edges, a gold ivy pearl bangle and a sessile oak pendant are all now available from the firm, the Jewellery Weblog reports, with the pendant costing $639 (£445) and the ring and bangle both priced at $1,207.

Look beyond the US Dollar to see what's really happening in the Gold Market

February 28th, 2009 by

It has become a knee-jerk reaction for investors to look at the Gold Price in terms of the US Dollar alone, and for commentators to only follow its moves in that currency. There is good reason for this, of course, for the US Dollar is the global reserve currency at present even if it is beginning to look of dubious value today.

Why don’t we measure gold in a strong currency such as the Euro?

Supermodel to front gold jewellery campaign

February 28th, 2009 by

Supermodel Bridget Hall has been selected as the new face of Marco Bicego Jewelry in the US.

The American will appear modelling 18-c gold pieces by Marco Bicego in the March issues of C, Elle, Harper’s Bazaar and W as part of an international print campaign, according to the National Jeweler Network.

A photo shoot has taken place in New York with fashion photographer Kenneth Willardt to showcase the designer’s new Jaipur collection.

Featuring gold designs with coloured gemstones, the Jaipur collection 2009-10 is modern, minimalist and inspired by nature.

Marco Bicego started to work in the family goldsmiths business at 22 and learnt his trade from his father, developing innovative designs that are now the hallmark of his own brand, established in 2000.

The designer describes his jewellery as blending Italian craftsmanship with "tradition, passion and imagination" to create uniquely crafted pieces that can be worn everyday.

Gold wires used in "nano origami"

February 28th, 2009 by

Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have developed a means to fold tiny materials into simple structures using nanotechnology.

According to Nanowerk News, the use of gold wires is one of the ways the scientists have discovered they can achieve the "nano origami" technique.

By embedding gold wires in materials, the team can introduce a current that reacts with a magnetic field to influence how they are folded.

It is thought that the discovery could lead to use in applications such as capacitors and motors, with faster microprocessors and better computer memory storage coming about as a result.

Tony Nichol, a mechanical engineering graduate student involved in the project, told the news source: "We’ve got the core components figured out and now we’re just having fun with figuring out some applications."

This week it emerged that a European Union-funded report is to investigate the potential contribution that nanotechnology can make to medicine.

Gold coins and jewellery on show in Ipswich

February 28th, 2009 by

Gold coins and jewellery will form part of an exhibition of Anglo-Saxon artefacts that will visit Ipswich from next month.

The items, which date back centuries, will be placed on show at the Town Hall Galleries in the Suffolk town and come from the De Wit collection, purchased recently by The Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, according to the Ipswich Evening Star.

Curated by Colchester and Ipswich Museum Service, the exhibition features a number of rare gold coins that are more than 1,200 years old and depict images of people, birds, animals, religious symbols and runes.

Mark Blackburn, keeper of coins and medals at the Fitzwilliam Museum, commented: "I am delighted that this collaboration between our museums will enable the people of Ipswich to see these extraordinary coins with their vibrant imagery."

Gold jewellery on show will include the gold Boss Hall Brooch from Sproughton and the Kennard Brooch, both of which were made more than 1,300 years ago.

Meanwhile, items including gold coins and ingots from a pirate shipwreck have been put on display as part of a new exhibition at the Field Museum in Chicago focused on the Whydah, which was wrecked in a storm off Cape Cod in 1717.
