South Africa to hold nanotechnology conference

January 31st, 2009 by

South Africa is to hold the third annual International Conference in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, it has been announced.

The event is due to begin in Pretoria on Monday and will showcase research and development that has been taking place in the nanotechnology field, BuaNews reports.

Scientists from 14 countries will be attending the event to discuss the technology, which often involves the use of gold.

Communication assistant director for the country’s Department of Science and Technology Zama Mthethwa explained that the event will benefit students operating in the area.

"It will deal with the issues that affect students working in nanoscience and technology research in the country, particularly financing, resources, networking and awareness issues," she was quoted as saying.

Gold has recently been used in the development of a new mechanical switch produced using nanotechnology.

The breakthrough has been made by Marius Trouwborst, who rearranged gold atoms in order for them to be used as a tiny break junction switch.

Columbus Silver signs New Mexico gold deal

January 31st, 2009 by

Columbus Silver has announced that it has signed a new agreement with a principal of Cordex Exploration for an option to acquire 100 per cent of his rights in a gold district of New Mexico.

The agreement with John Livermore covers around 2,400 acres of the Mogollon silver-gold district in south-west Mexico and includes the principal historic mines and part-explored vein systems.

Located around 120km north-west of Silver City, the Mogollon district covers an extensive silver-gold bearing epithermal vein field and recorded historic production, primarily from the Little Fanney and Last Chance mines, totalled 327,000 ounces of gold between 1905 and 1925.

Modern exploration activities at the prospect have been limited and Mr Livermore has conducted some evaluations previously that outlines a silver-gold deposit in the Queen vein.

Under the Livermore option agreement, Columbus Silver will start annual payments on the first anniversary and conclude them on the third anniversary of the deal in order to secure outright purchase, with a bonus payment due on commencement of commercial production.

Based in Vancouver, British Columbia, exploration and development company Columbus Silver operates in the western United States and its project activities are managed exclusively by Cordex, which is owned and operated by Mr Livermore and Andy Wallace.

Nanotechnology 'helps US economy'

January 31st, 2009 by

Nanotechnology could offer a solution to the current economic downturn in the US, it has been claimed.

According to the newly-created Nano World Headquarters, development of nanotechnology, which often involves the use of gold, may help improve energy innovation and create jobs in the country.

The technology is currently being used in a number of areas, including developing a cure for cancer, boosting the efficiency of the US power grid and powering electric cars.

Valerie Moore, executive director of the Houston, Texas-based centre, explained that the facility enables chemistry, physics, biology and engineering to be combined to aid in the "development and commercialisation" of nanotechnology.

"We are pleased that all of these elements come together at the Nano World Headquarters, promising unprecedented progress," she remarked.

And Mayor of Pearland, Texas Tom Reid also voiced his support for the technology, noting that "it will go a long way in strengthening [the state's] economic vibrancy".

Nanowerk recently revealed that gold is currently being used in the development of alternative uses for collagen as part of nanoparticle research at California State University.

Look beyond the US Dollar to see what's really happening in the Gold Market

January 31st, 2009 by

It has become a knee-jerk reaction for investors to look at the Gold Price in terms of the US Dollar alone, and for commentators to only follow its moves in that currency. There is good reason for this, of course, for the US Dollar is the global reserve currency at present even if it is beginning to look of dubious value today.

Why don’t we measure gold in a strong currency such as the Euro?

Perth Mint gold coins 'have Aboriginal influence'

January 31st, 2009 by

Australia’s Perth Mint has unveiled a new collection featuring pure gold coins.

The Aboriginal Dreamtime currency has been produced to showcase the country’s wildlife, Aboriginal culture and landscape, WA Today reports.

Designed by in-house artist Darryl Bellotti, the 45-coin ‘Dreaming Series’, which includes currency struck from 99.99 per cent pure gold, will launch between 2009 and 2011.

Chief executive officer of Perth Mint Ed Harbuz said the coins are likely to be of interest to collectors across the world as Aboriginal art "continues to be extremely popular".

"Darryl’s remarkable work can only extend the reach of its appeal by exposing it directly to large numbers of coin collectors worldwide," he told the news source.

Earlier this month Perth Mint announced that sales of a limited range of gold bullion coins have been resumed, after it was forced to close its order book late last year due to high demand in the current economic downturn.
